When the Atlanta Braves open the 2024 season Thursday in Philadelphia against the Phillies, they will do so with a man on the mound who is quickly cementing himself as a central figure to their current success and a driving force behind their championship goals.

The Braves named Spencer Strider as their opening day starter this week, a fitting nod to the present and future ace of the rotation, and an honor not lost on the 25-year-old right-hander.

“We obviously have a plethora of guys who are deserving of this,” Strider said. “That certainly makes it an honor for me, but I think, if you ask anybody, we’re all sort of focused on winning every game we play on each day and how that will get us to where we want to be in October.”

Even as Strider discussed the opportunity to get the season started for his team, there was that unmistakable theme to everything he and the Braves are setting out to do over the next seven months — their World Series aspirations.
