The time-honored tradition of baseball's hot stove hits Sin City this week. It is there that the executives, players, media and all other baseball people will set up shop this week. And it is there that all 30 teams hope to have substantive talks towards improving the big league club, the minor league system, or both.
The Atlanta Braves find themselves in a good place both financial and organizationally to continue their winter shopping, but general manager Alex Anthopoulos is taking his usual measured approach.
Here are news, notes and links from Day 1 of the Winter Meetings:

Meanwhile, the Braves announced that the Baltimore Orioles claimed infielder Rio Ruiz off waivers Monday. Ruiz, 24, was dealt to Atlanta along with Mike Foltynewicz in the Evan Gattis trade with the Houston Astros in January of 2015. He batted .189/.282/302 in 169 big league at-bats over the past three seasons. This move allowed Atlanta to clear a space on its 40-man roster, which could be used for a Rule 5 selection this week among other things.
